Second-phase car course (cat. B)
Le Grand-Saconnex GE

The second-phase course is intended for individuals who have obtained a probationary driving licence for category A or B. This type of licence can be identified by the absence of an expiry date in field 4b on the front of the licence.

The A1 sub-category is not concerned by this course. Furthermore, the course only needs to be completed once, regardless of the number of categories obtained.

The course must be completed within 12 months of obtaining the licence. After this period, Article 148, paragraph 1 of the OAC becomes applicable. The licence nevertheless remains valid, and no special authorization is required to participate in the course.
However, if the date indicated in field 4b of the licence has passed, the licence is considered expired: a driving authorization issued by the cantonal vehicle office is then required to attend the course. This authorization must be requested from the cantonal vehicle office starting from the day after registration.

Vehicle requirements

  • Participants may attend with their own vehicle
  • The vehicle must be in good working condition, with all safety checks completed (brakes, fluid levels), and a full tank of fuel
  • Two participants per vehicle are permitted
  • A vehicle rental option is available during booking; the price is indicated at the time of registration. For further information, please consult the General Terms and Conditions governing vehicle rental from AGEC 2 Phases .
  • Vehicles with automatic transmission are accepted with no impact on obtaining the definitive driving licence.

In the event of rental from AGEC

  • The general terms and conditions governing vehicle rental (GTCVR) from AGEC can be consulted here
  • The vehicles provided to customers by AGEC are exclusively equipped with automatic transmission.
  • In accordance with applicable regulations, AGEC reserves the right to assign up to two participants per vehicle. In such cases, the rental fee remains applicable per person. (GTCVR, Art. 2.2)

The complementary training aims to strengthen the practical and theoretical skills of young drivers in order to improve their safety and behaviour on the road. It is based on a dynamic and participative approach, alternating between theoretical input, real-life scenarios and the sharing of experiences.

One of the key focuses of this training is to maintain participant engagement throughout the day through a variety of facilitation techniques. It aims to develop three core dimensions:

  • The emotional and motivational dimension: encouraging introspection, the sharing of experiences and awareness of driving behaviour.
  • The cognitive dimension: deepening theoretical knowledge related to driving dynamics, traffic regulations and risk perception.
  • The practical dimension: enabling participants to experience real driving situations through supervised exercises (braking, cornering, safety distances, eco-driving, etc.).

The training day is structured around several thematic modules. Each module combines theory, practice and reflection, with clearly defined learning objectives.

Introduction

This initial phase welcomes participants, sets the framework of the course (operating rules, safety) and helps create a climate of trust conducive to open discussion. A round of introductions also allows everyone to express their expectations and driving experience.

Braking Module

This module aims to teach participants how to perform emergency braking safely. Through practical trials at different speeds and under varying conditions, participants become aware of braking distances, reaction time and the effectiveness of driving aids such as ABS.

Environmentally Responsible Driving Module

Participants discover the principles of anticipatory, smooth and energy-efficient driving. They are introduced to eco-friendly best practices and explore modern technologies (hybrid or electric vehicles, driver assistance systems, etc.). A practical route illustrates the tangible benefits of eco-responsible driving.

Safety Distance Module

This module addresses the importance of maintaining sufficient distance from other road users, in relation to speed and traffic conditions. Practical demonstrations help to better visualise and understand stopping distances and safe following distances.

Cornering Module

Participants experience the risks associated with excessive speed when cornering, particularly on slippery surfaces. Through exercises such as wet-surface slalom, they learn to adapt their speed and adopt the correct reflexes to maintain vehicle control.

Distraction Module

This module raises awareness of the many sources of distraction while driving (mobile phones, passengers, thoughts, etc.) and their consequences. Real-life scenarios clearly illustrate loss of attention and accident risks. The group works together to develop prevention strategies.

Conclusion and certificate award

The day concludes with a final discussion during which participants share their impressions and feedback. An official certificate of participation is awarded at the end of the training.

The complementary training is based on an interactive, learner-centred teaching approach. It alternates between theoretical sessions, the sharing of experiences and practical exercises on a closed track, in order to promote long-lasting integration of knowledge and behaviours.

The objective is not merely to transmit rules, but to provide real-life situations that encourage each participant to reflect on their own driving, identify their automatisms and develop safe, responsible and appropriate reflexes.

Participatory approach

Participants are encouraged to be actively involved throughout the day. From the introduction onwards, a round of presentations helps create group dynamics and allows discussion of expectations and personal experiences. Discussions, role-playing scenarios and collective debriefings foster learning through sharing and awareness.

Balance between theory and practice

Each topic is introduced through clear theoretical elements, illustrated by concrete cases or demonstrations. These are then directly put into practice on the track through supervised exercises: emergency braking, cornering management, anticipatory driving, safety distance, etc.

This alternation allows for better assimilation and makes learning immediately applicable. It also provides instant feedback, with the opportunity to observe progress or identify areas for improvement.

Simulations under realistic conditions

Exercises are carried out in a secure environment but as close as possible to real driving conditions: wet surfaces, simulated obstacles, speed variations and different types of vehicles. This gradual immersion enables participants to better assess risks and adapt their behaviour in a concrete manner.

The complementary training does not involve a formal examination in the strict sense, but is based on continuous assessment of learning outcomes throughout the day. The objective is to support each participant in an individual progression process, with an emphasis on awareness, behavioural analysis and the improvement of driving reflexes.

The various modules include phases of observation, self-assessment and individualised feedback. During practical exercises (braking, cornering, safety distances, eco-driving, etc.), instructors provide personalised feedback, enabling each participant to measure their progress and identify areas for improvement.

Group discussions also allow participants to compare viewpoints, explore certain aspects of driving in greater depth and reinforce learning through collective reflection.

The assessment also takes into account participants’ level of involvement, their compliance with instructions, their ability to collaborate with the group and to engage in a constructive approach. Attitude, open-mindedness and demonstrated interest during discussions or practical exercises are key elements of the process.

At the end of the day, each participant receives an official certificate of participation, compliant with legal requirements, which can be downloaded at their convenience from their client area as of the day following the course. This document confirms the validity of the complementary training completed and may be required as part of the process of obtaining the definitive driving licence, in accordance with applicable regulations.

These certificates are issued only to participants who have met all the requirements described in the general course conditions.

This formal recognition supports the participant’s commitment to a responsible and safe driving approach.
